Welcome to the Sutton and Hollesley Heaths Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).
Sutton, Lower and Upper Hollesley Commons, Parsnip, Hollesley and Sutton Heaths are part of the Sandlings Special Protection Area for woodlark and nightjar which includes Rendlesham and Tunstall Forests. Look out for the new way markers for the Hollesley Horse Route and enjoy a ride across this rare and beautiful Sandlings heathland.
Throughout the year the heaths are a feast for the senses from the bright yellow, coconut-scented gorse to the honey-sweet purples of bell heather and ling. You may hear the fluting song of woodlark from the scattered trees or as it hovers overhead and in the summer's dawn and dusk the spooky churring of the nightjar.
In June and July silver-studded blue butterflies flutter across this heathland mosaic of heathers,
short grassland, gorse and bare ground. These rare plants and animals are easily damaged or disturbed.
Please help us to protect them by keeping to the public rights of way suitable for horses (RUPP, Byway and Bridleway) and the Hollesley Horse Route.
The Hollesley Horse route has been created following discussions with local landowners, managers and horse user groups. It follows firebreaks and other tracks and links to rights of way, creating circuits for long or short rides and avoiding sensitive areas. Look out for the Hollesley Horse Route symbol and Ordnance Survey maps for details of Rights of Way suitable for horses and carriages. There may also be signs indicating undesirable routes.
This project has been kindly supported by the Suffolk Coast and Heaths Connect scheme.
