Theres something for everyone here from woodland
and ponds to grassland and fen.
The beauty of this reserve, located about 1km down Eldon Lane, lies in
its many different habitats all of which are
within a relatively small area. Situated on the edge of Breckland it displays
a typical range of sand, grassland, fen, scrub and secondary woodland
which host plants such as meadow saxifrage, yellow loosestrife, small
scabious, greater water-parsnip and saw sedge.
Two uncommon sedges long-stalked yellow sedge and carnation sedge
have recently made a comeback following
work to clear scrub and control water levels. Woodcock, kingfisher, grass
snake, smooth newt, frog, ruddy darter and broad-bodied chaser dragonfly
can also be seen. Look out
for the white admiral butterfly with its unmistakeable gliding flight.
Hurst Fen & Howlett Hills is cared for by Suffolk Wildlife
Trust on behalf of Mildenhall Parish Council.
Other Trust reserves nearby: Norah Hanbury-Kelk Meadows, Rex Graham, Wangford Warren
