Lackford Lakes is a designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) for its birds and dragonflies. Over 17 species of dragonfly and damselfly have been recorded here. The larger hawker species hunt the lakes whereas banded demoiselle prefer the fast flowing streams.
