What should I wear for a work party?
Working outdoors on a nature reserve invariably
means it is impossible to keep your clothes clean so it is important
to dress accordingly. In fact, part of the fun is getting your hands
dirty! Clothes that are tough and hard-wearing that you don't mind getting
a little dirty are ideal.
Ground conditions vary enormously but woods, fens and marshes can be
very wet and wellies or waterproof boots are essential. Otherwise, stout
outdoor boots or shoes are fine.
During the winter months, make sure you are warm and waterproof, there
is sometimes little shelter if you get caught in a shower. In the summer
it is important to protect yourself from the sun. Trousers rather than
shorts and a long sleeved top are best. Don't forget your hat!
Do I need my lunch?
All work-parties involve stopping for tea and lunch breaks
- usually the best part of the day - so make sure you bring something
to eat and drink. A hot drink is wonderful in the middle of winter but
working on a hot summer day, you can lose a lot of fluids, so a big
bottle of water is essential.
There is nothing like a couple of hours of working in the fresh air
to build up an appetite, so pack plenty to eat - you'll have earned
it.
Do I need to bring tools?
You don't need to worry about bringing any tools or personal
protective equipment such as a hard hat as the warden or team leader
will provide all of these. Work gloves are also provided although you
might prefer to bring your own.
Any thing else?
There is always time to enjoy the wildlife on the reserve
so if you have a pair of binoculars bring them along. Identification
guides are great if you want to learn more about the plants and animals
living on the reserve.
